Extensive investigations in a number of phases at Eysey Manor are producing very significant results over a large area of this quarry site. Landscapes and settlements from the Bronze Age and Iron Age, Roman trackways, medieval landscape development and settlement sites have all been explored. Large quarry sites offer unparalleled opportunities to explore whole landscapes rather than individual sites (as the overall site plan below illustrates) and one of the interesting results from this project has been to see how responses to the environment differed from period to period. In the Bronze Age, for instance, settlements here consisted of a single roundhouse each, shifting along a river valley through time. In the early post-medieval period, the same landscape was transformed by the construction of ditches to create a water meadow environment next to a moated site.
